Issues

Candidates owe voters a clear and detailed statement about where they stand on the critical issues facing our schools. On these pages you can find my thoughts and positions. Please check back frequently as I will be publishing detailed discussions here.

These issues include:

  • Creating a culture of innovation so that our schools are on the cutting edge of education in the increasingly globalized world our students are entering.
  • Reducing academic stress and improving student social and emotional health, which will support the continued academic excellence of our schools. Academic research demonstrates conclusively that we can have both social and emotional health and higher achievement -- in fact, we can't have it any other way.
  • Effective planning and budgeting to preserve neighborhood schools and effectively manage our resources (including Cubberley) during a time of change in both enrollment and financial resources. This will require a stronger planning capability within PAUSD, and more effective relationships with partners like the City of Palo Alto.
  • Meeting the needs of every child, no matter what their family background or level of achievement. In particular, we need to take a close look at how well we are serving our students in the lower and middle lanes, and to close the achievement gap that disproportionately affects our lower income and underrepresented minority students.
  • Improving how the board operates in critical areas including decision-making, transparency, accountability, and relation with staff.
